TU cancels collective agreement with paper industry
[16.09.2009]
The salaried employees' collective agreement covering the paper industry
expires on 15 October
The Union of Salaried Employees TU
cancelled its collective agreement with the paper industry on Friday 11
September.
Almost 5.000 salaried employees in the paper industry will be without a collective agreement from October 15 unless a new agreement has been approved before that date.
TU and the employer association, Finnish Forest Industries, began talks on Thursday, concerning pay rises during the last part of the agreement period and the so called "tail" - issues agreed upon in the previous bargaining round.
The social partners also intend to address reports from the common working groups on how to develop the employment system and on how incomes for salaried employees have changed over the past decade.
The reason why TU cancelled the agreement was that the two sides had made no progress whatsoever on these two issues, explains Jukka Hämäläinen, who is responsible for paper industry bargaining at TU.

- And the Finnish Forest Industries did
not show any real willingness to open up discussions on these issues, he
adds.
- As to the next step, we are going to negotiate on the whole agreement.
Hämäläinen stresses that -despite the expiration of the collective agreement- that which was agreed upon in the existing collective agreement shall remain in force, as part of each and everyone's personnel employment agreement.
- However, it is important to remember that during the non-agreement period no local agreements should be made.
It should be noted too that the Paperworkers' Union has also cancelled its collective agreement which thus will expire in mid October.
