Walkout by staff of TeliaSonera's broadband services

[18.03.2009]

"Rude personnel policy" made salaried employees angry

The staff of TeliaSonera Finland's broadband services walked out from their work places at noon on Tuesday. The move closed down all broadband units of TeliaSonera Finland and caused serious disruptions to services around the country.

The protest is due to go on until Thursday. Almost 3,000 employees of TeliaSonera Finland have voluntarily opted to participate in support strikes. The participants oppose the results of the mandatory joint consultation that ended last week and "the rude personnel policy of the company".

The results of the consultation mean a reduction of almost 320 jobs from the broadband services. So far about 50 persons have found a new job within the company, and some hundred employees are set to join the company's Competence Pool to look for work.

According to the bargaining unit of the Union of Salaried Employees (TU), it is highly probable that the employees, transferred to the Competence Pool, will end up being terminated. Almost half of the job losses will take place in Helsinki, 50 of them in Jyväskylä and 30 in Tampere.

In early February, the mandatory joint consultation at the wholesale unit, responsible for international deliveries, ended with a loss of 15 jobs.

It was on Tuesday when TU and TeliaSonera's managers last met for talks on the situation created by the mandatory joint consultations.
The company considers the walkout protest illegal.
